Vitinha’s Hat Trick Leads PSG to 5-3 Victory Over Spurs
In a thrilling encounter at Parc des Princes on March 15, 2024, Paris Saint-Germain triumphed over Tottenham Hotspur with a score of 5-3, driven by a remarkable hat trick from midfielder Vitinha. Despite the defeat, Tottenham showcased resilience, having led the match twice through goals from Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani.
The match began with Spurs eager to recover from a heavy 4-1 loss to Arsenal just days prior. Tottenham’s head coach Thomas Frank opted to bring younger players into the starting lineup, recalling talents like Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, and Pape Matar Sarr. The early exchanges were lively, with both teams creating opportunities.
Kolo Muani, on loan from PSG, was particularly involved, nearly setting up Gray for a chance. However, it was Tottenham that struck first. In the 35th minute, a clever flick from Bergvall found Gray, who delivered a pinpoint cross for Richarlison to head home, giving Spurs a 1-0 lead.
Just before halftime, PSG responded dramatically. Vitinha unleashed a powerful strike from 25 yards, finding the net via the crossbar after receiving a pass from Quentin Ndjantou, leveling the match at 1-1.
The second half saw Tottenham regain the lead only five minutes in. Richarlison’s well-placed header from a set-piece was met by Kolo Muani, who converted the follow-up to make it 2-1. Their joy was short-lived, however. Vitinha quickly equalized for PSG once more, curling a shot into the net in the 53rd minute after being given too much space.
In a whirlwind 13-minute period, PSG scored three goals to take control of the match. Fabián Ruiz gave PSG the lead with a smart finish, benefiting from a defensive error by Sarr. The hosts then capitalized on a poorly defended corner, allowing William Pacho to score, extending their advantage to 4-2.
Spurs fought back once again, as Kolo Muani netted his second goal of the match in the 72nd minute, narrowing the deficit to 4-3. Yet, the final nail in Tottenham’s coffin came when Vitinha was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty. He confidently converted, sending goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario the wrong way to complete his hat trick.
The match concluded with a late red card for Lucas Hernández of PSG, but the night belonged to Vitinha and PSG, who ended Tottenham’s unbeaten run in the Champions League. Following this defeat, Tottenham sits at 15th place in their league phase after five fixtures, intensifying scrutiny on Frank’s management.
This match not only highlighted PSG’s attacking prowess but also the potential of Tottenham’s younger players as they seek to find consistency in a challenging season.
