The Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow is currently closed with no confirmed reopening date following a significant fire at a nearby building on Union Street. The fire broke out on March 8, 2024, prompting the evacuation of guests and staff as approximately 300 firefighters worked tirelessly for four days to contain the blaze.

As of March 12, 2024, Glasgow City Council (GCC) has taken control of the area, establishing a secure zone around the affected site. This zone is intended to facilitate ongoing assessments and necessary demolition work. In a statement, a Grand Central employee indicated that the hotel has no timeline for reopening, stating they have “no idea” when guests will be able to return.

GCC has also implemented additional security measures to ensure public safety for those in the vicinity of the hotel. The area surrounding the Grand Central Hotel remains restricted as emergency services continue to assess the situation.

Following the fire, Glasgow Central station was temporarily locked down; however, services have resumed on the lower-level platforms. Network Rail announced that the high-level platforms will remain closed until at least March 18, 2024.

A spokesperson for the Grand Central Hotel, which operates under the voco brand, confirmed the closure and reassured the public of the safety of both guests and staff. “Following a fire at a neighbouring building, voco Grand Central was safely evacuated as a precaution. No guests or colleagues were harmed,” the spokesperson stated. They emphasized that the hotel will stay closed while they cooperate with emergency services and relevant authorities, noting that access to the hotel is still restricted based on official guidance.

The situation remains fluid as authorities continue to manage the aftermath of the fire. Further updates regarding the reopening of the Grand Central Hotel will be provided as more information becomes available.
