Nataša Bošković Resigns as Special Prosecutor Amid Controversies
Nataša Bošković has stepped down from her role as Special Prosecutor following a decision made during the State Prosecutor’s Council meeting held today. According to a statement from the Council, her resignation was voluntary and takes immediate effect.
Bošković’s departure comes amid a backdrop of controversies surrounding her tenure. The advocacy group, Action for Social Justice, previously indicated that she was a candidate for appointment to the Constitutional Court of Montenegro. Concerns have been raised over her handling of various cases, with critics alleging that she did not adequately address certain complaints over the years.
Details from the State Prosecutor’s Council Meeting
During today’s meeting, the State Prosecutor’s Council made significant decisions regarding compensation for state prosecutors. A resolution was passed to increase the base salary for specific positions within the State Prosecutor’s Office by up to 30%. This adjustment applies to civil servants and employees classified under Article 9 of the Collective Agreement for the Administration and Justice sectors.
The Council also reviewed ten complaints regarding the legality of actions taken by state prosecutors and heads of state prosecutor’s offices. Out of these complaints, the Council deemed six to be unfounded. In two instances, it was noted that the Council had previously issued opinions. One complaint was referred to the appropriate state prosecutor’s office, while another was determined not to pertain to the legality of work.
Concerns Over Prosecutorial Independence
The Council addressed three complaints concerning the independence of state prosecutors and heads of state prosecutor’s offices. It concluded that all three complaints were substantiated, highlighting ongoing concerns about the autonomy of these officials.
The developments following Bošković’s resignation reflect broader issues within Montenegro’s judicial system, particularly regarding accountability and the protection of prosecutorial independence. The State Prosecutor’s Council’s actions indicate a commitment to addressing these challenges, ensuring both oversight and support for state prosecutors moving forward.
