Ukraine Rejects Claims of Drone Attack on Putin’s Residence
President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly denied allegations from Russia suggesting that Ukraine conducted a drone attack on President Vladimir Putin‘s residence. The claims were made by Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who asserted that Ukraine launched an assault using 91 long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeting Putin’s state residence in the Novgorod region of northwestern Russia.
In response, Zelensky characterized the accusations as “typical Russian lies,” intended to provide the Kremlin with a pretext for ongoing military actions against Ukraine. He emphasized that Russia has a history of targeting Ukrainian government buildings and called upon the global community to remain vigilant. “It is critical that the world doesn’t stay silent now. We cannot allow Russia to undermine the work on achieving a lasting peace,” he stated.
Lavrov’s comments were shared in a statement on Telegram on October 30, 2023. He claimed that all 91 drones purportedly aimed at Putin’s residence were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defense systems. According to Lavrov, there were no reports of casualties or damage resulting from the alleged attack. He further indicated that, in light of what he described as the “final degeneration of the criminal Kyiv regime,” Russia would review its negotiating position regarding peace talks, although he clarified that Russia does not intend to exit the negotiation process with the United States, as reported by the Russian news agency Tass.
This assertion from Moscow follows a recent meeting in Florida between Zelensky and former President Donald Trump. During discussions, they explored a revised peace plan to resolve the ongoing conflict. Zelensky noted that the United States had offered Ukraine security guarantees for a period of 15 years, with Trump suggesting that an agreement on this matter was “close to 95%” finalized. The Ukrainian leader highlighted unresolved issues concerning territorial disputes and the status of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant, while there appears to be limited progress on the future of Ukraine’s contested Donbas region, which Russia aims to control fully.
Previously, Russia has rejected significant elements of the proposed peace plan. Following the US-Ukraine discussions, the White House revealed that President Trump had “concluded a positive call” with Putin. Shortly after Lavrov’s remarks, Zelensky took to social media platform X to express his frustration, stating that Russia was “at it again, using dangerous statements to undermine all achievements of our shared diplomatic efforts with President Trump’s team.”
As tensions escalate between the two nations, the situation remains precarious, with both sides closely monitoring developments and preparing for potential changes in their diplomatic strategies.
