New EU Entry Rules Start October 12: Motorhome Owners Alerted

Motorists in the UK who own motorhomes or caravans are facing significant changes as new regulations will come into effect on October 12, 2023. Under the new Entry/Exit System (ESS), millions of drivers may be denied entry into the European Union if they do not comply with the updated requirements. This change will affect those planning to take their vehicles to the EU for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

According to Mark Sheppard, a senior trading manager at Safeguard, the implementation of the ESS requires careful attention from travelers. He noted that UK citizens must also prepare for the upcoming European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which is expected to be introduced in the last quarter of 2026.

Impact on Travelers and Border Procedures

A spokesperson for the Labour Party Government emphasized the importance of the changes, stating, “While ESS checks will be a significant change to the EU border, we are in constant and close dialogue with our European partners to try and minimise the impact on the British public.” They advised travelers to allow extra time for their journeys as the new systems are established.

The ESS will be phased in over a six-month period, meaning that different ports may have varying requirements until April 2026. This gradual implementation is designed to minimize disruptions, particularly during busy travel seasons.

Travelers using key routes such as the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone, or Eurostar at St Pancras International will undergo the new checks at the border before departing from the UK. This change is expected to alter the travel experience significantly, necessitating that drivers and passengers familiarize themselves with the new procedures well in advance of their trips.

As the October deadline approaches, UK motorhome and caravan owners are urged to prepare for the changes to ensure a smooth transition into European travel. Understanding the new regulations will be crucial for avoiding delays and ensuring compliance at the border.
