Podgorica Residents Await Compensation for August Wildfire Damage
Residents of Podgorica are still waiting for the government to fulfill its promise of compensation following the devastating wildfires that swept through the region in August 2025. As the city reports an influx of inquiries from affected citizens regarding the compensation process, the Montenegrin government has yet to make a final decision on the payout, which is estimated to total approximately €1.7 million.
The wildfires, which impacted forested and rural areas near the capital, destroyed over 300 hectares of land and vegetation. Numerous agricultural holdings, vineyards, and properties were severely affected. Notably, over 43,000 vine plants were lost, significantly impacting the local agriculture sector.
According to Nikola Jocic, the President of the Commission for Damage Assessment from Natural Disasters, there were 334 requests for damage assessment submitted between August and December 2025, with losses estimated at nearly €1.7 million. Of these, 284 requests were related to wildfire damage, and while 244 cases have been resolved, others remain pending due to insufficient documentation.
Jocic noted that the municipal commission acted swiftly, assessing affected areas and visiting households to document and evaluate the damage. The assessment process took around four months, with the team visiting over 300 households to conduct inspections and compile reports.
During the assessment period, the commission also received 35 requests for damage evaluations due to hailstorms, all of which were completed. Additionally, there were 15 requests related to other natural disaster impacts, such as livestock deaths and destruction of beehives, which have also been addressed.
The government, led by Prime Minister Milojko Spajic, had previously promised assistance to those affected by the wildfires. A donor account was opened at the Ministry of Finance to collect funds aimed at alleviating the damages.
As of now, approximately €124,000 has been raised through donations. The government has also announced additional support for both individuals and businesses, amounting to €300,000. Furthermore, the Montenegro Eco Fund and the Ministry of Ecology allocated another €400,000. This brings the total amount designated for recovery efforts to about €824,000.
Despite these commitments, compensation payments have yet to be distributed to citizens, leaving many uncertain about their financial recovery. Reports indicate that the government may only cover about 20 percent of the assessed damages, with some officials suggesting that actual compensation could be as low as 10 percent of the evaluated losses.
Jocic emphasized that the government has indicated a willingness to consider increasing the compensation limit beyond the current 10 percent cap, which has been set by existing regulations. The final decision on both the percentage of compensation and the timeline for disbursements will rest with the government.
On March 12, 2026, the Montenegrin government partially approved a request from the Commission for Damage Assessment for €300,000 in funding. The Ministry of Finance has proposed that €200,000 be allocated from the 2026 budget reserve to support these efforts.
It is important to note that the commission did not review requests submitted after the August 2025 fires, as those were completed in January 2026. The total damage assessment submitted by the municipal commission estimated losses at around €2 million. Additionally, a significant number of decisions from the commission sent to the Ministry of Finance have not been executed due to a lack of available funds, with 102 decisions totaling €64,944.95 remaining unrealized.
As the situation unfolds, Podgorica residents are urged to stay informed and seek updates from the relevant authorities regarding the status of their claims and potential compensation.
