Police Officer Charged After Alleged Assault at Sydney Protest

A New South Wales (NSW) police officer faces charges for allegedly assaulting a protester during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Sydney on June 27, 2023. The officer is accused of punching Hannah Thomas, a former candidate for the Greens party, leading to significant injuries that required surgical intervention.

The protest took place outside SEC Plating in Belmore, where demonstrators claimed the company supplied parts for weapons utilized by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). SEC Plating has denied these allegations. Following the incident, NSW Police confirmed that the officer’s employment status is currently under review. A critical incident investigation is ongoing, which is standard procedure when an event results in serious injury.

The police officer, a 33-year-old senior constable, has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and is scheduled to appear in court next month. During the protest, which police described as unauthorized, officers ordered the participants to disperse. A confrontation ensued, leading to the injuries sustained by Thomas. Authorities reported that five individuals, including Thomas, were arrested during the demonstration.

Thomas, who is 35 years old, was hospitalized following the alleged assault and received treatment for her facial injuries. In a social media post shortly after the event, she expressed concerns over her potential loss of permanent vision in her right eye. Initially, Thomas faced charges for failing to comply with a police order and resisting arrest. However, earlier this month, prosecutors dropped all charges against her, and she was awarded approximately A$22,000 (around $14,500 or £11,000) in legal costs.

In comments made outside the court, Thomas’s attorney, Peter O’Brien, stated that the long-term effects on her right eye remain uncertain. O’Brien also announced plans to file civil proceedings against the NSW Police in the Supreme Court, alleging malicious prosecution, assault, battery by police, malfeasance in public office, and collateral abuse of process.

This incident has raised broader concerns about police conduct during protests in Australia, particularly as public demonstrations surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict continue to evoke strong reactions across various communities. The ongoing investigation will likely draw further attention to the actions of law enforcement in such settings.
