UK Berry Harvest Thrives as Blueberries and Strawberries Surge

Households across the UK can expect a bountiful supply of blueberries and strawberries this summer, thanks to favorable weather conditions. Reports indicate that the blueberry harvest is set to increase by nearly 25 percent this year, reaching approximately 5,133 tonnes by the end of August, compared to 4,187 tonnes during the same period last year. Sales of blueberries have also risen by nine percent year-on-year, according to BirminghamLive.

The record-breaking warmth of the spring has contributed significantly to this surge. Daniel Martin, Group Commercial Director at SandA Produce, noted that the blueberry season began two weeks earlier than usual. He attributed this early success to strong light levels and minimal rainfall, leading to excellent fruit size and uniform ripening across the crop. In his words, “We are optimistic about the season and expect to see excellent flavour and shelf life from this year’s crop.”

Strawberries and Other Berries Benefit as Well

The positive outlook extends beyond blueberries. Nick Marston, Chair of the British Berry Growers, reported that all UK berry crops, including strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, are experiencing a boost of around 25 percent. Marston stated, “The weather has been very beneficial for all berry crops.” This announcement aligns with earlier forecasts indicating that major supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and M&S would see significant yields of strawberries this season.

In a previous interview, Bartosz Pinkosz of the Summer Berry Company highlighted the remarkable size of the strawberries being harvested. He described berries from his West Sussex farm as so large that they “cannot fit in your mouth.” Pinkosz remarked, “I have genuinely never seen a harvest produce such large berries consistently. Some are supersized – growing to the size of plums or even kiwi fruits.”

Technological Advancements in Berry Picking

While the harvest is thriving, the industry is also making strides in technology. Jim Floor, Managing Director of Hall Hunter, shared insights into the progress of robotic fruit picking. He acknowledged that while advancements in robotics and automation are promising, the technology is not yet ready for widespread commercial application.

The impressive harvest and positive sales trends are expected to benefit consumers, who will enjoy plentiful, high-quality berries throughout the summer months. As the season progresses, the anticipation for fresh produce remains high, with growers and retailers optimistic about meeting consumer demand.
