British Tourists Face New £185 Fee for US Visa Applications

British tourists planning to travel to the United States may encounter a new charge of £185 starting from October 1, 2023. This fee, termed the Visa Integrity Fee, has been introduced by the US government as part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing visa overstays. It specifically affects visitors from countries that are not part of the Visa Waiver Program and require non-immigrant visas.

Most British visitors will not be impacted by this fee. According to Brenda Beltran, a travel specialist at Holafly, the United Kingdom is included in the US Visa Waiver Program. This means that the majority of British tourists visiting for tourism or short business trips of up to 90 days can continue to use the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), avoiding the new charge. The current ESTA fee remains at $21 (£15).

Who Will Need to Pay the New Fee?

Despite the reassurance for most, some British travelers will still incur costs when applying for specific visas that fall outside the standard ESTA system. This includes student visas (F-1, M-1), work visas (H-1B, L-1, O-1), and any extended stays beyond the 90-day ESTA allowance. Additionally, specialty visa categories for exchange programs, journalism, or diplomatic purposes will also necessitate payment of the Visa Integrity Fee.

Beltran emphasized that for the vast majority of British holidaymakers, travel procedures will remain unchanged. “This update sounds alarming at first glance, but most Brits won’t notice any difference,” she stated. “As long as you qualify for ESTA, which nearly all UK holidaymakers do, you won’t be hit by the new charge.”

Refund Policy for Eligible Travelers

The newly implemented legislation also includes provisions for refunding the £185 fee to eligible travelers. The Secretary of Homeland Security is mandated to reimburse individuals who can prove that they complied with their visa conditions and did not attempt to overstay without proper authorization. To qualify for a refund, travelers must leave the US within five days of their visa’s expiration, not have engaged in illegal employment, and maintain their non-immigrant status.

In summary, while the introduction of the Visa Integrity Fee may raise some concerns, the impact on British tourists remains minimal. Most will continue to utilize the ESTA system without any additional financial burden.
