India has officially opened the Chenab Rail Bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world, which stands at an impressive height of 1,178 feet above the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir. This monumental structure, inaugurated on June 6, 2025, surpasses the height of London’s Shard and even the Eiffel Tower. The bridge spans 4,314 feet and represents a significant engineering achievement, constructed using over 28,000 tonnes of steel.

Construction of the Chenab Rail Bridge commenced after its approval in the early 2000s and took approximately 20 years to complete. The project, which cost around ₹14.86 billion (£122 million), is a vital component of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). This railway line is set to connect the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India via rail for the first time, enhancing connectivity in the region.

Engineering Marvel in Challenging Terrain

Designed by WSP Finland, with contributions from Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner and Vienna Consulting Engineers, the bridge showcases advanced engineering techniques. It features blast-resistant foundations, high-strength steel arches, and a specialized paint system designed to endure for 15 years. The structure is engineered to withstand extreme conditions, including earthquakes of up to magnitude 8, high winds, and temperatures as low as −20 degrees Celsius.

The bridge’s construction faced numerous challenges. It is located in a seismically active area characterized by fractured terrain and adverse weather conditions. Additionally, it lies just 39 miles from the Line of Control (LoC), which marks the de facto border with Pakistan. These factors necessitated meticulous planning and innovative engineering solutions.

Significance of the Project

The Chenab Rail Bridge is not merely an architectural feat; it plays a crucial role in enhancing the socio-economic landscape of the region. By providing all-weather rail connectivity, the bridge is expected to facilitate trade and travel, significantly impacting the lives of local residents.

Following the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the bridge’s completion. He expressed his pride in the achievement, stating, “The Tricolour flies high over the Chenab Rail Bridge! It’s a feeling of immense pride that this bridge seamlessly blends ambition with execution, reflecting India’s growing capability to build futuristic infrastructure in the most challenging terrains.”

With its combination of height, engineering prowess, and strategic importance, the Chenab Rail Bridge stands as a testament to India’s commitment to infrastructure development and its ability to overcome geographical and technical challenges. As regular rail traffic officially commences, the bridge is poised to become a symbol of progress and connectivity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and beyond.
