Manchester United’s Cunha Sparks Controversy with Celebration vs Everton
Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha found himself at the center of controversy following a heated moment during the match against Everton on March 15, 2024. As United clung to a 1-0 lead in second-half injury time, Cunha celebrated exuberantly in the face of Everton’s Dele Alli, leading to a tense exchange that caught the attention of players and commentators alike.
During the injury time, Cunha attempted to shepherd the ball out of play, only to pump his fists in front of Alli. The Brazilian then fell to the ground, continuing his celebration after winning a goal kick. This incident occurred as Everton pushed for an equaliser, causing James Tarkowski to be restrained by Luke Shaw as the situation threatened to escalate.
Despite the apparent provocation, referee Darren England chose not to issue a yellow card to Cunha. In a swift response, United’s manager Michael Carrick substituted Cunha for Ayden Heaven, although it remains unclear whether the change was pre-planned or a direct result of the incident.
Former United defender Gary Neville described Cunha’s actions as “antagonistic” during his commentary on the game. He remarked, “They’ve both given each other quite a bit in the game. Garner’s done well. Cunha’s done well. They’ve stuck at it. Cunha’s celebration in Garner’s face is antagonistic.”
Despite the heated moment, Cunha avoided a booking, which would have marked only his second yellow card in the Premier League this season. United ultimately held on to secure a crucial three points, moving them into fourth place in the league table as they pursue Champions League qualification.
The only goal of the match came from United’s substitute, Benjamin Sesko, in the 71st minute, with Cunha, Sesko, and new signing Bryan Mbeumo combining for the decisive play. Although the performance was not United’s finest under Carrick’s interim management, the victory propelled them three points clear of Chelsea, who drew with Burnley over the weekend.
Manchester United remains unbeaten in their last ten matches, a streak that began during the tenure of former manager Rúben Amorim. The team had previously shown promise with wins over Manchester City and Arsenal in Carrick’s early matches in charge. While they have yet to replicate those standout performances, they continue to secure valuable points, rebounding from a draw against West Ham earlier this month.
After the match, Carrick commended Cunha’s overall contribution, stating, “That was kind of where we were tonight. I think we had to put a lot into the game and everyone did, and I think credit to Everton who made us dig deep. It wasn’t the prettiest or most perfect game football-wise for us.”
He acknowledged Cunha’s defensive efforts and his ability to create a decisive moment in the match, adding, “He’s a great character, I’ve got to know him. Another big moment for Matheus, he’s had a number of them since the very start, starting at City when he came off the bench.”
Manchester United will look to build on this victory as they prepare for their next challenge, aiming to solidify their position in the race for European football next season.
