Protests Erupt in Bnei Brak Over Proposed Conscription Laws
Violent protests erupted in the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak, located just east of Tel Aviv, as thousands gathered to oppose proposed conscription laws aimed at the ultra-Orthodox community. The unrest saw two female soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) being escorted to safety by police as a crowd pursued them through the streets. Initial reports confirmed that 26 individuals, including the soldiers and police officers, were caught in the chaos.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the violence, labeling the rioters as an “extreme minority.” In a post on X, he stated, “I strongly condemn the violent riots in Bnei Brak against female IDF soldiers and Israel police officers. This is a grave and unacceptable matter.” Netanyahu emphasized that the actions of the rioters do not reflect the views of the entire Haredi community.
Escalation and Arrests
The protests intensified on Sunday, resulting in at least 23 arrests. Demonstrators reportedly destroyed a bus, set police motorcycles ablaze, and overturned a patrol vehicle. According to reports from Ziratnews, three police officers sustained injuries during the clashes. Journalists, including Roi Yanovsky, faced attacks while covering the events, highlighting the volatile atmosphere.
The protests stem from ongoing tensions surrounding legislation that could require members of the ultra-Orthodox community to serve in the military. Many residents of Bnei Brak argue that their primary duty lies in full-time religious study, opposing any form of mandatory enlistment. This issue has long been contentious in Israeli society and has resurfaced against the backdrop of Israel’s ongoing conflict with Gaza.
Wider Context and Government Response
The unrest in Bnei Brak coincides with reports of escalating violence in Gaza. Hospitals have reported at least 11 Palestinian deaths, including five men in their 20s killed in Khan Younis, according to Nasser Hospital. The Israeli military has confirmed carrying out multiple strikes in response to ceasefire violations near the Yellow Line.
The IDF has faced challenges coordinating operations in densely populated neighborhoods, particularly in light of rising tensions. Tel Aviv District Commander Sargaroff indicated that IDF visits to these areas were not pre-coordinated. Police have struggled to manage the situation effectively, leading to increased security measures on Jabotinsky Street, where officers aim to prevent further disturbances.
Netanyahu reiterated his commitment to maintaining law and order, asserting that “we will not allow anarchy, and we will not tolerate any harm to IDF servicemen and security forces who carry out their duties with dedication and determination.” His remarks underscore the government’s resolve to address the unrest while simultaneously navigating the complexities of Israeli society’s divisions.
As protests continue and transportation routes remain blocked, observers caution that without a resolution, future demonstrations could escalate further into violence. The situation in Bnei Brak is emblematic of the broader societal challenges facing Israel, particularly concerning the integration of the ultra-Orthodox community into national service.
