A tragic incident unfolded in Ireland on January 12, 2020, when 17-year-old Keane Mulready-Woods was kidnapped and brutally murdered in a gang-related crime that has left the nation reeling. The teenager, reportedly involved in a drug feud in Drogheda, was lured to a house where he was subjected to horrific violence before being dismembered. His dismembered limbs were discovered in a sports bag on a footpath, while his head, hands, and feet were later found in a burnt-out vehicle in Dublin.

The murder of Keane Mulready-Woods has been described as a shocking incident that sparked a wave of violence across Ireland. His killing was believed to be linked to a drug feud, and it has raised serious concerns about gang activity in the region. Keane was drawn into the criminal world, working as a drug runner under pressure from local gangs. His final call to his mother was heart-wrenching; he informed her he would be home late and requested taxi money be left out, unaware that it would be his last communication.

Keane was reportedly under strict instructions to return home before dark, a guideline he had generally adhered to. At the time of his death, he was on licence following a conviction for intimidating a local mother over her child’s debts to the gang. It is believed that Robbie Lawlor, the prime suspect in the murder, targeted Keane due to suspicions about his involvement in the death of Lawlor’s brother-in-law, Richie Carberry, in November 2019.

Lawlor initially claimed he intended only to administer a “punishment beating” for a minor drug debt but escalated to torturing Keane. Sources close to the investigation indicated that Lawlor was obsessed with the teenager, convinced that Keane played a significant role in his brother-in-law’s death. Following Keane’s murder, Lawlor reportedly taunted his adversaries, further highlighting the brutality of the crime.

The violent aftermath of Keane’s murder included a series of retaliatory attacks. Lawlor himself was gunned down shortly after the incident while attempting to collect a drug debt. Before his death, he had a lengthy criminal history, including numerous convictions and a recent acquittal for attempted murder. Just weeks before his murder, Lawlor had faced an assault outside a gym, which was linked to one of his alleged victims.

In a tragic victim impact statement, Keane’s mother, Elizabeth Mulready, expressed her grief, sharing that she could hear her son calling for her. She described the anguish of losing her child in such a horrific manner, stating, “To lose my child, my son, my baby in a most inhumane, barbaric death is shocking. A piece of me died as well.”

The investigation into Keane’s death has led to numerous arrests. In February 2023, local criminal Paul Crosby received a 10-year sentence for his involvement in the murder, while his associate, Gerard “Rocky” Cruise, was sentenced to seven years. Another accomplice, Gerard ‘Ged’ McKenna, confessed to disposing of evidence related to the crime.

Keane Mulready-Woods’ brutal murder serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing issues related to gang violence and the tragic consequences that can arise from involvement in criminal activities. As Ireland continues to grapple with the fallout from this case, it remains a poignant illustration of the devastating impact of violence on families and communities.
