Trump Claims US ‘Obliterated’ Military Targets on Iran’s Kharg Island
US President Donald Trump announced on March 10, 2024, that the United States has “obliterated” military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island. In a statement posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump described the operation as “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East.” He noted that he refrained from destroying the island’s oil infrastructure for “reasons of decency,” but warned that he may reconsider if Iran or any entity interferes with the free passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
This announcement follows a series of escalating tensions in the region, with Trump ordering the deployment of US Marines to the Middle East. The Pentagon is mobilizing a Marine expeditionary unit and additional naval assets to address the situation. According to officials, the expeditionary unit typically includes around 5,000 Marines and sailors, equipped with various warships and support vessels.
Strategic Importance of Kharg Island
Located in the northern Persian Gulf, Kharg Island serves as a critical terminal for Iran’s oil exports. For the initial weeks of the current conflict, it remained untouched despite ongoing US and Israeli military operations. The recent bombing raids mark a significant escalation in hostilities, as Trump confirmed that the US Central Command executed the strikes at his direction.
Trump’s post asserted, “Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East and totally obliterated every military target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island.” He reiterated his stance on the importance of maintaining safe passage through the Strait, which is vital for global oil supplies.
In response to the heightened tensions, Trump stated that the US Navy will soon escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. This announcement came as Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, threatened to leverage the closure of the Strait against both the US and Israel.
Rising Violence and Humanitarian Concerns
The conflict has also seen a tragic increase in casualties. In Lebanon, an Israeli airstrike on a health center resulted in the deaths of 12 medical staff. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health condemned the action, describing it as part of an ongoing violent approach against health workers that violates international humanitarian laws. The ministry has reported a total of 773 fatalities in Lebanon due to the ongoing conflict, with over 1,933 injuries.
On the Iranian side, the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that at least 1,858 people have died, including civilians and military personnel, since the conflict intensified. Meanwhile, US military losses have also been reported, with 13 US soldiers killed, including several crew members from a military refueling aircraft that crashed in Iraq.
As the violence escalates, security alerts have been issued in Qatar, prompting evacuations in specific areas due to threats of missile or drone attacks. The country’s Ministry of Interior has urged residents to stay informed through official sources and adhere to safety protocols.
In a broader context, the United Nations has appealed for more than $300 million in humanitarian aid to address the crisis in Lebanon, emphasizing the urgency of international support as the conflict continues to displace over 800,000 people.
The situation remains fluid, with military operations ongoing and diplomatic efforts being challenged by the rising tide of violence. The US, under Trump’s leadership, is taking significant steps to assert its military presence in the region while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics.
