Trump Criticizes London Mayor Khan During Scottish Visit

US President Donald Trump reignited tensions with London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Monday, labeling him a “nasty person” during a press conference at the Trump Turnberry golf resort in South Ayrshire. Trump criticized Khan’s leadership of the British capital, asserting that he has “done a terrible job” as mayor. This latest exchange marks a continuation of their long-standing feud.

“I’m not a fan of your mayor,” Trump stated. “I think he’s done a terrible job, the mayor of London… a nasty person.” The president’s comments drew a momentary look of discomfort from UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who was present at the press conference. Starmer quickly intervened, saying, “He’s a friend of mine, actually,” in defense of Khan.

In response to Trump’s remarks, a spokesperson for Mayor Khan expressed delight at the prospect of Trump visiting London. “Perhaps these are the reasons why a record number of Americans have applied for British citizenship under his presidency,” the spokesperson added, emphasizing the city’s diversity as a strength.

Trump’s comments come shortly after he accepted an invitation from King Charles III for a state visit to the UK, marking a significant diplomatic gesture. Scheduled for September 17 to 19, 2024, the visit will include a stay at Windsor Castle for Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

Although the White House has characterized the Scotland trip as “private,” centered on visits to Trump’s golf courses, the president has taken the opportunity to engage with British politics and revive past rivalries. This is not the first instance of Trump’s public criticism of Khan; during an earlier state visit in 2019, he referred to the mayor as a “stone cold loser” following Khan’s criticism of Trump’s policies and handling of various issues, including the London Bridge terror attack in 2017.

Mayor Khan, who was re-elected for a third term in the 2024 election, has consistently countered Trump’s critiques, describing them as divisive and misaligned with the values of London. This ongoing exchange reflects the complexities of transatlantic relations and the differing political landscapes in the United States and the United Kingdom.
