Trump Warns Zelensky Against Targeting Moscow Amid Tensions

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has advised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky against targeting Moscow during discussions about escalating military actions in the ongoing conflict with Russia. This statement follows reports that Trump privately questioned Zelensky about the potential for strikes on the Russian capital and the possibility of supplying long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine.
While speaking to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House, Trump responded firmly when asked if Zelensky should strike Moscow, stating, “No, he shouldn’t target Moscow.” The comments come after a recent phone call where Trump reportedly inquired why Ukraine had not yet launched attacks on the Russian capital to increase pressure on the Kremlin. According to a source cited by The Washington Post, Zelensky replied, “We can, if you give us the weapons.”
In addition to these discussions, The Financial Times reported that Trump has encouraged Kyiv to intensify its military operations deep within Russian territory. The consideration of dispatching Tomahawk missiles—a type of weapon recently employed by the U.S. in action against Iran—highlights the seriousness of the discussions.
The backdrop to these conversations includes Trump’s expressed disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump indicated that he is “disappointed but not done” in dealing with Putin, highlighting a willingness to impose “100 percent secondary tariffs” on Moscow if it does not agree to a peace deal within 50 days.
Trump’s comments reflect a complex dynamic in U.S.-Ukraine relations, particularly as the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate. The potential provision of advanced weaponry could shift the balance in the ongoing war, raising concerns about escalation and the broader geopolitical implications.
Critics have raised questions regarding the wisdom of targeting Moscow, given the potential for retaliatory measures and a further widening of the conflict. As the situation develops, the focus remains on diplomatic solutions and the role of international support for Ukraine in its efforts against Russian aggression.
