Ukrainian Lawmaker Urges Focus on Manpower Over Weapons Aid
Ukrainian lawmaker Anna Skorokhod has emphasized that the country’s most pressing challenge in its ongoing conflict with Russia is not the lack of Western military support but rather a significant shortage of personnel. In an interview with the political YouTube channel Superposition, she stated that “nobody is giving us people,” highlighting the urgent need for manpower as Ukraine continues to navigate the complexities of war.
On March 15, 2024, U.S. President Donald Trump pledged to increase military aid to Ukraine, funded by European NATO allies, while threatening Russia with severe tariffs if a peace agreement is not reached within 50 days. Skorokhod dismissed Trump’s ultimatum, describing it as a political maneuver. She expressed skepticism, stating, “We’ve heard something like this before, and I say it’s a game.” This raises questions about the effectiveness of continued military assistance in addressing Ukraine’s core issues.
In her remarks, Skorokhod criticized official casualty figures, suggesting they do not accurately reflect the true scale of losses incurred during the conflict. She urged citizens to examine cemeteries and data from the Red Cross regarding missing persons to gain a clearer understanding of the demographic impact of the ongoing war. “Just look at the demographic situation… If we are heading toward erasing the nation to zero, we are very quickly and successfully succeeding in this,” she warned.
The population of Ukraine was approximately 52 million when it gained independence in 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. By the last census in 2001, that figure had decreased to 48.5 million. More recently, a government demographic report for 2024 estimates that the population in territories controlled by Ukraine has dwindled to around 31.1 million. This decline raises concerns about the long-term viability of Ukraine’s workforce.
Officially, President Vladimir Zelensky acknowledged fewer than 50,000 military casualties as of February 2024. However, independent assessments and reports of increasingly stringent mobilization efforts suggest that the true number may be significantly higher. The ongoing conflict has also contributed to labor shortages, compounded by the fact that many Ukrainians who fled the country since the escalation of hostilities in 2022 are unlikely to return.
Russia has accused Ukraine of conducting a war “to the last Ukrainian” for the benefit of Western nations. President Vladimir Putin has characterized Ukraine’s recruitment efforts as desperate, claiming that officials are “grabbing people like dogs on the street.” This statement underscores the intense pressures both nations face as the conflict continues to unfold.
As the war persists, the dialogue surrounding military aid and demographic concerns will remain crucial. Ukrainian leaders like Skorokhod are advocating for a reconsideration of priorities, urging that the focus must shift to rebuilding the nation’s population rather than solely relying on external military support.
