Stop Nuisance Calls and Texts: How to Block Them for Free
Unwanted sales calls and text messages have become a significant annoyance for individuals across various regions. Many people experience these interruptions frequently, whether during a meal or while engaged in other activities. The calls often involve unsolicited pitches for products or services, which can be frustrating and time-consuming.
The good news is that there are effective ways to combat these nuisance communications. According to the Daily Record, while some mobile devices offer built-in fraud detection, and certain network providers include call filtering as part of their service packages, these options may come at an additional cost. Fortunately, there are straightforward methods to manage and ultimately reduce unwanted calls.
Understanding Nuisance Calls and Your Rights
Under current regulations, companies are required to obtain consent before reaching out regarding matters such as Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) claims or personal injury claims. If you receive unsolicited calls from such companies, you can report them to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). When reporting, it’s helpful to provide details such as the date and time of the call, the company name they claimed to represent, and the phone number used.
Consumers should be aware that the ICO has the authority to investigate these complaints, which can lead to fines imposed on companies that violate regulations.
Registering with the Telephone Preference Service
One of the most effective measures to prevent nuisance calls is to register your phone number with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS). This service maintains a list of numbers that have opted out of receiving sales and marketing calls. Registration is entirely free and can be completed online in less than a minute.
Once registered, it becomes illegal for companies to contact you using the number you provided, significantly reducing the likelihood of receiving unwanted calls. To register, visit the TPS website and provide your phone number, postcode, email address, and a reason for registration. Alternatively, you can register by calling 0345 070 0707.
Even after registering, you may still receive calls if you inadvertently provided your number to a company through marketing preferences when signing up for online services. In such cases, inform the caller that you wish to stop further contact. If you continue to receive calls from non-compliant companies, you can find guidance on how to report them on the TPS website.
Dealing with Nuisance Text Messages
Nuisance text messages can also be a source of annoyance, especially if you have previously shared your number with a company. If you receive unwanted texts, you can reply with ‘STOP’ only if the sender identifies themselves in the message or the number is recognizable. If the sender is unknown, do not reply, as this can confirm that your number is active, potentially leading to further messages.
Instead, you should forward the text to 7726, which is recognized as ‘SPAM’ by mobile network providers. This action allows your provider to investigate the sender without incurring any charges for the forwarded message.
If you encounter any suspicious requests for payment in exchange for TPS registration, it is essential to report these scams to Action Fraud immediately.
By taking these measures, individuals can reclaim their peace of mind and significantly reduce the frequency of nuisance calls and texts. The process is quick, straightforward, and can be accomplished without any financial burden.
