British boxing heavyweight Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria on December 29, 2023. The incident resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals and left Joshua hospitalized with minor injuries. He was a rear passenger in a Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary lorry shortly after 11:00 AM local time, near Makun in Ogun State.

Images shared on social media depict the 36-year-old boxer appearing disoriented and in pain as motorists rushed to assist him. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that their response team arrived at the scene within three minutes, enabling them to conduct swift rescue operations. The agency noted that the Lexus Jeep was likely traveling over the speed limit and lost control while attempting to overtake the lorry.

The FRSC’s preliminary report confirmed that the accident involved two vehicles: a black Lexus Jeep and a red commercial Sinotruck. Among the five adult males involved, two lost their lives, one sustained injuries, and two escaped unscathed. Joshua was extracted from the wreckage and transported to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to recover.

Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Lanre Ogunlowo, the local police commissioner, stated, “I can confirm to you that an accident occurred and the victim has been taken to the hospital.” The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) is also involved in the inquiry to gather necessary documentation.

Family members expressed their shock at the news. One relative, who wished to remain anonymous, told the BBC, “We are hoping for his speedy recovery and also for the people who passed away. I pray for the departed to rest in peace.” They highlighted that Joshua was traveling to their family home for the New Year celebrations, which made the incident even more poignant.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, who is currently on holiday in the Caribbean, confirmed that he had just learned of the accident. He expressed optimism regarding Joshua’s condition but could not provide further details at that time.

The boxing community has rallied around Joshua, with several notable figures expressing their support. Turki Alalshikh, a prominent figure in the Saudi boxing scene, shared on social media, “Thank God brother you are safe, and my condolences to the ones who passed away in this incident.” American boxer Alycia Baumgardner, who recently defended her titles on the undercard of Joshua’s fight against influencer Jake Paul, also extended her well-wishes.

As of now, there are no updates regarding the extent of Joshua’s injuries. The boxing world continues to hope for his swift recovery while mourning the loss of those who tragically lost their lives in the accident.
