Queen Elizabeth II Supported Andrew Amid Virginia Giuffre Controversy
The late Queen Elizabeth II provided her son, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, with “full support” following the public emergence of a controversial photograph featuring him with his accuser, Virginia Giuffre. This revelation has surfaced in the context of ongoing scrutiny over Andrew’s associations and past actions.
Insights from Epstein Files
Documents released by the United States government reveal that an email from David Stern, described as “the man in the palace” for convicted financier Jeffrey Epstein, conveyed the Queen’s support to Epstein in March 2011. This correspondence came just three months after Andrew asserted he had ended his friendship with Epstein. Stern referred to Andrew as “PA” and noted, “PA has full support of his mum; only dealing with you was ‘unwise’.”
The controversial photograph, which shows Andrew with his arm around Giuffre, was first disclosed in February 2011. Around the same time, another image emerged showing Andrew walking with Epstein in New York’s Central Park following Epstein’s child sex conviction. Shortly after the photograph of Andrew and Giuffre surfaced, he reportedly emailed Epstein stating, “we are in this together.”
Royal Decisions and Financial Support
The Queen’s private concerns about Andrew’s association with Epstein had not been previously disclosed. In 2019, she authorized Andrew to step down from his role as a working member of the Royal Family soon after his widely criticized interview on BBC’s Newsnight. Despite this, she permitted him to retain the title of the Duke of York and maintain his status as a prince.
It was King Charles III, Andrew’s brother, who ultimately stripped him of his titles in October 2025, following the posthumous publication of Giuffre’s memoirs. Reports suggest that Queen Elizabeth privately funded a £12 million settlement to Giuffre to resolve a civil lawsuit in which she claimed she was trafficked to the UK at the age of 17 to have sexual relations with Andrew.
Even in the face of scandal, the Queen demonstrated her continued support for Andrew. In 2022, she chose him to accompany her at a remembrance service for her late husband, Prince Philip, at Westminster Abbey.
Stern’s connection to Andrew included his tenure as a director of the now-defunct Pitch@Palace, an initiative aimed at supporting entrepreneurs. Notably, a photograph of Stern smiling alongside Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, was also among the documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Throughout this tumultuous period, Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing in connection with the allegations made by Giuffre and others. As the situation continues to develop, the ramifications of these revelations and the royal family’s response remain under scrutiny.
