Kevin Rudd Transitions to High-Paying Role After US Ambassadorship
Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will leave his post as Australia’s Ambassador to the United States on March 31, 2026, to take on a new and lucrative role as the global president of the Asia Society. This position is expected to pay him more than $700,000 annually, significantly increasing his earnings from the ambassadorship, which was valued at approximately $330,000 per year.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed Rudd’s departure during a press briefing on Tuesday, highlighting the former ambassador’s extensive experience in international relations. Rudd previously held the presidency of the Asia Society from 2020 until his ambassadorship began in March 2023. During his last year in that position, he received a total compensation of USD $524,007, which is about AUD $786,000 at current exchange rates.
Building a Financial Empire
Rudd’s new role will further enrich a family already known for its financial success. His wife, Therese Rein, is a self-made millionaire, having founded the employment services company Ingeus, which has expanded internationally and generated substantial profits. In 2014, Rein sold part of her business for up to AUD $190 million, significantly bolstering the couple’s wealth.
The Rudds have also cultivated an impressive real estate portfolio, which includes a $17 million beachfront property in Noosa, purchased in 2020. This luxurious estate on Sunshine Beach offers stunning ocean views and was previously owned by the founders of a popular Australian burger chain.
In addition to their Noosa residence, the couple once owned a high-end penthouse in Brisbane’s Admiralty Quays, which they acquired for $8 million in 2016. This property featured exceptional amenities, including seven car spaces and a private pool with views of the Brisbane River.
Influence and Expertise
As a fluent Mandarin speaker, Rudd has positioned himself as a prominent voice on China and US-China relations. His leadership in major projects during his ambassadorship has further solidified his status as a global thought leader in international policy and climate issues. The Asia Society, headquartered in New York, plays a crucial role in fostering dialogue between Asia and the United States, attracting notable figures from various sectors, including business, politics, and culture.
“The Asia Society has become an influential hub for leaders and thinkers, and Rudd’s return to this position will undoubtedly enhance its mission,” said a source familiar with the organization.
Rudd’s return to the Asia Society marks a significant transition in his career, bringing together his political acumen and international expertise. As he steps into this new role, the financial and cultural impact of his leadership will be closely monitored within both Australia and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
