Helena Hauff and F#X Revive Black Sites with New Album R4
In a significant musical revival, artists Helena Hauff and F#X have reactivated their Black Sites project with the release of their new album, R4. This marks the first output under the Black Sites name in over a decade and serves as their debut full-length for the acclaimed Tresor Records in Berlin. The album, recorded live to tape without any overdubs or revisions, proudly displays its rawness, reflecting an instinctive approach to music-making.
The duo’s return to Black Sites isn’t merely a nostalgic look back; it signifies a continuation of their artistic journey after years of individual pursuits. According to Hauff and F#X, the hiatus allowed them to breathe and explore personal projects, yet they felt an unfulfilled potential that beckoned them back to collaboration.
Reigniting a Unique Collaboration
Reflecting on the origins of Black Sites, F#X explained that their collaboration blossomed at the Golden Pudel, a Hamburg venue known for its vibrant music scene. “We were both young musicians eager to create,” he stated. “After meeting at the Pudel, we realised we had a lot of interests in common.” Hauff added that their time spent in the studio was intense, leading to a sudden pause as they sought to focus on their individual artistic directions.
Despite the break, the urge to continue the project lingered. “We had some things left unsaid and unfinished,” Hauff noted. “It felt like there was more to explore.” The artists revisited unreleased tracks, leading to a renewed inspiration and the decision to create a full album.
The duo’s approach this time reflects their growth over the past decade. Hauff acknowledged that the opportunity to work with Tresor, a prestigious label, offered them a strong foundation that may not have been available years ago. The term “punk ethos” often associated with their work resonates throughout the album, emphasizing the importance of creating without excessive refinement.
Punk Influence and Artistic Integrity
In discussions about their creative ethos, Hauff and F#X acknowledged the significant influence of punk culture on their music. Hauff, while appreciating the energy of punk, hesitated to label herself as a punk artist. “I like simplicity and naivety in music,” she said. “Counter-culture is vital; we need people going against the mainstream to foster growth in society.”
On the technical side, the duo remains committed to their vintage equipment. While Hauff prefers using older machines, F#X expresses an openness to experimenting with new technology, provided it allows for tactile control. This blend of old and new techniques continues to shape their sound.
As for the future of Black Sites, both artists remain uncertain about their next steps. “We don’t know yet, to be honest,” F#X admitted, leaving open the possibility of further exploration.
With the release of R4, Hauff and F#X invite listeners into an immersive auditory experience that marries instinct with raw energy. Their dedication to authenticity and artistic exploration ensures that Black Sites will continue to resonate within the electronic music community. The album is now available for audiences eager to engage with this fresh yet familiar sound.
