“Hot Pursuit Rises on Netflix Charts 11 Years After Release”
Netflix’s recent addition of the action-comedy film Hot Pursuit has significantly boosted its popularity, propelling it to the top of streaming charts just over eleven years after its initial release in cinemas. The film, which stars Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, has climbed to No. 2 on the UK’s charts and reached No. 4 in the United States, while being the top-rated film in Colombia, according to data from FlixPatrol.
Released in 2015, Hot Pursuit was met with lackluster reviews, holding an approval rating of merely eight percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics described it as “shrill and unfunny,” failing to capitalize on the chemistry between the two leads. Despite the initial negative reception, the film now enjoys renewed interest, particularly among audiences who appreciate its comedic elements.
The premise of Hot Pursuit follows straight-laced policewoman Officer Rose Cooper, portrayed by Witherspoon, as she embarks on a mission to escort Daniella Riva, played by Vergara. The duo’s plans quickly unravel when a violent ambush leaves Daniella widowed. Together, they must navigate a treacherous path filled with crooked cops and dangerous gunmen while trying to avoid killing each other in the process.
Critical Reception and Audience Reactions
Upon its release, Hot Pursuit faced harsh criticism. In a review for The Guardian, critic Jordan Hoffman remarked on the film’s absurdity, acknowledging, “I can’t believe just how dumb Hot Pursuit is. Moreover I can’t believe just how much I laughed.” He noted that despite its predictability, the film delivered moments of genuine humor, comparing the experience to an amusing office party.
Audience reactions have varied, with some viewers expressing surprise at the film’s entertainment value. One fan stated, “Not everything is funny, but it is for sure funny enough to keep you interested.” Another viewer compared it favorably to the male buddy cop film Heat, asserting that the chemistry between Witherspoon and Vergara was a highlight.
Conversely, not all responses were favorable. Some critics and viewers labeled the film a “hot mess,” criticizing its predictable storyline and perceived lack of originality. One commenter pointed out that many scenes felt recycled, questioning the film’s overall creativity.
A Star-Studded Cast
In addition to Witherspoon and Vergara, Hot Pursuit features a diverse ensemble cast. Robert Kazinsky plays Randy, a prisoner entangled in the chaos, while Matthew Del Negro appears as Detective Hauser. The supporting cast includes Michael Mosley, Richard T. Jones, Joaquin Cosio, and Jim Gaffigan, among others, contributing to the film’s comedic dynamic.
The resurgence in Hot Pursuit‘s popularity highlights how streaming platforms can breathe new life into older films, often leading to renewed discussions about their merits and flaws. As audiences continue to discover or rediscover the film, it remains to be seen whether this trend will influence future viewing habits or lead to a reevaluation of the film’s place in the comedy genre.
