New Film “Potop” Explores Montenegro’s Identity and Ecology
The premiere of “Potop,” the debut feature film by director Dušanka Belada-Bošković, took place on November 26, 2023, at the Sinepleks cinema in Podgorica. The film delves into the complexities of identity, ecology, and the chronic divisions within Montenegrin society. Centered around the urban and ecological controversy surrounding the submergence of Šavnik and a referendum on the construction of a hydroelectric plant, “Potop” raises challenging questions without providing easy answers.
Belada-Bošković, in her work produced by Radio-televizija Crne Gore (RTCG), emphasizes the multifaceted nature of the film’s title. Speaking to the media, she explained that the term “Potop” not only refers to the flooding of Šavnik but also serves as an allegory for the deluge of moral and social values depicted in the film. She noted, “The residents of Šavnik witnessed the submersion of the town of Plužina in the 1960s during the construction of the Piva hydroelectric plant. This event remains divisive; for some, it marked the beginning of development, while others view it as cultural genocide.”
Belada-Bošković elaborated on how the title is intentionally left open to interpretation, reflecting the duality of opinions surrounding the flooding of the river. “Today’s situation is similar. For some, the flooding is a disaster; for others, it’s a new beginning. This ambiguity is crucial to understanding the film’s message,” she said.
The film’s narrative illustrates the polarization within contemporary society, where rigid beliefs often prevent meaningful dialogue. Belada-Bošković expressed concern about the “black-and-white world” in which society operates, stating, “In today’s fast-paced world, where information is abundant and often misleading, communication becomes particularly challenging. Our film reflects how differing opinions hinder real dialogue.”
Nature plays a significant role in “Potop,” serving as a living, almost symbolic character. The director aimed to connect the film’s visual beauty to its ecological message, highlighting the importance of environmental preservation. “I fear that Montenegro today is only an ecological state on paper. The awareness and sense of responsibility towards our natural resources among the population remain underdeveloped,” she stated.
Belada-Bošković believes that showcasing Montenegro’s natural beauty can inspire a greater appreciation for its ecological value. “If even half of the population became truly aware and lived in harmony with nature, Montenegro could become a real paradise,” she noted. Her commitment to raising awareness through film reflects her belief in the power of art to inspire change.
Transitioning from a successful career in theater to film has been a significant step for Belada-Bošković. She revealed that her initial passion for film began during her studies at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, where she focused on film directing. After establishing her career in theater, she returned to her roots with “Potop,” recognizing the unique beauty of collaborative filmmaking.
Belada-Bošković acknowledged the potential of Montenegro’s film industry, stating, “I believe Montenegro has a talented workforce capable of realizing serious film projects. While our market is small, and internal divisions can sometimes hinder progress, I am convinced that collaboration will yield remarkable results.”
The film “Potop” stands as a testament to the creative potential within Montenegro, encouraging conversations about identity, ecology, and the value of understanding differing perspectives. As audiences engage with this thought-provoking work, Belada-Bošković hopes that it will inspire reflection and dialogue among viewers, ultimately contributing to a more cohesive society.
