Former UFC Champion Alexandre Pantoja Avoids Surgery After Injury
Alexandre Pantoja, the former UFC Flyweight Champion, will not require surgery on his arm following a serious injury sustained during his fight at UFC 323. Pantoja’s injury occurred in the first round of his title defense against challenger Joshua Van on December 9, 2023, when he attempted a head kick that resulted in a dislocated elbow.
During the opening moments of the bout, Pantoja’s kick was caught by Van, leaving him vulnerable and leading to a dramatic fall. As he attempted to break his fall with his left arm, it snapped upon impact, effectively ending the fight. While initial assessments suggested a lengthy recovery period for the 35-year-old fighter, recent developments indicate a more optimistic outlook.
Positive Update on Recovery Timeline
In a surprising turn of events, esteemed MMA journalist Ariel Helwani reported that Pantoja will not need surgical intervention. According to his team, only the tendons were affected, with no fractures or ligament damage. Helwani shared this news during his segment on the 2025 MMA Awards, stating, “Just the tendons were affected – no fractures, ligaments are intact, no surgery.”
Fans were taken aback by the news of Pantoja’s swift recovery. Many had anticipated that he would face an extended period on the sidelines due to the severity of his injury. Now, there is hope that he could return to the octagon as early as mid to late 2026. “They’re hoping he will return maybe mid to third quarter of 2026,” Helwani reported.
Pantoja’s Impressive Career and Future Prospects
Pantoja, who secured the flyweight title by defeating Brandon Moreno in July 2023, successfully defended the championship four times before his loss to Van. His defeat marked a significant moment, as Van became the second-youngest champion in UFC history and the first born in the 2000s to claim a title.
In the aftermath of UFC 323, Van expressed his willingness to grant Pantoja a rematch. However, before that potential rematch occurs, Van is expected to defend his title against a top-ranked contender in the flyweight division, possibly Manel Kape or Tatsuro Taira.
The MMA community has expressed relief and excitement at the news of Pantoja’s recovery. One fan commented on social media that it was “great for him and honestly surprising,” while another simply stated, “Lucky guy.” As Pantoja resumes training without any cast or support, his determination to return to the sport remains evident.
Overall, Alexandre Pantoja’s journey reflects the resilience of athletes in the face of adversity, and fans eagerly await his next steps in the highly competitive flyweight division.
