Montenegro to Host EU-Western Balkans Summit in June 2026
Montenegro is set to host the historic European Union and Western Balkans Summit on June 1, 2026, led by President Jakov Milatović. This significant event will bring together leaders from all EU member states, marking it as one of the largest diplomatic gatherings in Europe in 2026. The decision by the European Council to hold the summit in Montenegro serves as a strong political statement and an acknowledgment of the progress made by the citizens of Montenegro on their path to EU integration.
Milatović’s office stated that this summit is a testament to the Western Balkans’ place in Europe’s future and highlights Montenegro’s role as a credible partner committed to regional stability and development. According to the latest report from the European Commission, Montenegro is on track to potentially become an EU member by 2028.
The strategic goal for Montenegro is to build a European, modern, and strong state that serves the interests of all its citizens. Milatović emphasized that the current objectives facing the institutions must be achieved, focusing on implementing reforms and taking action to foster a modern society with a robust economy. Achieving these goals will position Montenegro to secure an accession agreement during the EU-Western Balkans Summit, where the country will again showcase its progress and enter the final phase of the accession process.
The organization of the summit in Montenegro holds symbolic significance. In a year marking two decades since the restoration of independence, the country will host discussions on the future of EU expansion, new investment plans from the EU, and the integration of the region into a unified European market. This event is expected to solidify Montenegro’s path toward full EU membership by 2028, reinforcing political, economic, and security ties with EU member states.
The EU-Western Balkans Summit is poised to send a message of confidence in the country’s stability, institutions, and the results of ongoing efforts. Milatović noted that it is essential for Montenegro to complete its commitments and continue working daily towards building a modern society and a strong economy. The presence of all European leaders in Montenegro will not only support the nation but also reflect the broader commitment to stability in the region.
