Train services in the UK faced significant disruptions on February 4, 2024, following a derailment incident near the Selhurst Depot. The three major rail operators, Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express, have issued a strong advisory urging passengers to refrain from travel due to severe delays caused by multiple incidents in the area.

Network Rail is currently investigating the derailment, which has obstructed rail lines leading towards both Norwood Junction and London Bridge. Fortunately, officials reported no immediate injuries resulting from the incident. In a statement released on social media platform X, Network Rail Kent and Sussex confirmed, “We’re responding to a suspected derailment involving a train near Selhurst Depot, which is blocking the lines towards Norwood Junction and London Bridge. This is causing disruption to services in the area.”

The three affected rail operators have communicated that delays could extend up to 60 minutes. Passengers are advised to consider alternative travel routes. Southern’s advisory emphasized, “If you are travelling on our network today, your journey may be delayed and you may need to use an alternative route to reach your destination. If you can, please delay your journey until later today.”

In addition to the derailment, a signalling fault has compounded the situation, restricting the number of operational rail lines between Norwood Junction and London Blackfriars. Trains operating on the available lines are now required to reduce their speeds. This has resulted in suspended services on several key routes, including those connecting London Bridge to East Grinstead, and Orpington to Luton.

Affected services include trains that typically run between Welwyn Garden City and Sevenoaks, which are now limited to the section between London Blackfriars and Sevenoaks. Similarly, trains from Rainham to Luton are only operational between Rainham and Dartford. Routes such as Horsham to Peterborough and Brighton to Bedford may also experience diversions via Selhurst instead of the usual Norwood Junction route.

Network Rail has assured passengers that specialist teams are on-site to manage the situation and assess any further implications of the derailment. They have pledged to provide updates as the investigation progresses, aiming to restore full service as quickly as possible.

For the latest updates and breaking news, passengers and the public can stay informed through official channels and advisory messages from the rail companies involved.
