Actress Lisa Faulkner is set to make her return to the stage in the world premiere of the theatre production of Single White Female, which opens at Brighton’s Theatre Royal on 9 January 2024. This new adaptation of the classic 1992 psychological thriller film features Faulkner in the role of Allie, a single parent, opposite Kym Marsh, who portrays the obsessive roommate Hedy.

Faulkner, 53, is well-known for her roles in popular television series including Missing You and Holby City, as well as her co-hosting role on John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen with her husband, chef John Torode. In an exclusive interview with HELLO!, she expressed her excitement about the new production. “I think we’ll have fun. I’m really looking forward to playing Allie, and playing that slightly psycho character will be great for Kym,” Faulkner said.

The script, written by Rebecca Reid, updates the story for a modern audience, incorporating themes of social media. Faulkner shared her enthusiasm for the refresh, stating, “It reads really fast and like a film, so I was excited about it.” She reminisced about watching the original film, noting how impactful it was. “I remember thinking it was brilliant; I loved Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh.”

Family Life and Support

In addition to her theatrical commitments, Faulkner balances family life with her husband and their teenage daughter, Billie, whom she adopted when she was a baby with her former husband, actor Chris Coghill. Billie, now 19, has not seen the film but has read the script with her mother. Faulkner mentioned, “She’ll come to see the play. It’s one of those plays where, if I wasn’t in it, I’d take her to see it.”

Faulkner’s family and friends are also enthusiastic about her new role. Notable names like Angela Griffin and Amanda Holden are planning to attend performances, though Faulkner quipped that she prefers not to know when they arrive to avoid distraction. “I’ll check my phone and see that they’re there afterwards,” she laughed.

Her husband, John Torode, is actively involved in her preparation. “He’s been running through the lines with me. He’s so happy for me,” Faulkner said, describing their relationship as supportive. “He’s my husband and my best mate. We really do support each other and hold each other’s hands through everything. He’s such a gentleman and so kind.”

Billie’s Aspirations and Future Performances

Billie currently resides at home but enjoys a nomadic lifestyle, traveling frequently. Faulkner noted, “I don’t see her for weeks, then she’s back. She hasn’t left home quite yet, thank goodness.” Although Billie has shown an interest in acting, Faulkner is cautious about her pursuing the profession. “I’m like: ‘No, keep away from the acting.’ I think it can be a great thing, though it’s very up and down. But if she wants to do it, she can.”

The UK tour of Single White Female will run until 13 June 2024. For more information, including ticket details, visit swfonstage.com. Faulkner’s journey from a beloved television star to a stage performer is a testament to her versatility and passion for her craft.
